I'm desperate for a cat (or two). I grew up with them so I miss having a feline about the place. Our circumstances aren't quite right to open our doors to any pets just at the moment and my fiance isn't a cat person so he keeps trying to put me off, but soon... :rotfl:

I have a Degu that I adopted via the Pets at Home re-homing scheme nearly 2 years ago.

Degus are medium-sized rodents that originate from South America. They are like a short-haired Chinchilla or in UK terms a cross between a rat and a squirrel.

They are highly intelligent, social animals. They are strict vegans, somewhat house-trained and trainable in other ways. They have the capability ultimately to respond to voice commands (mine will return to his cage on command).

I think they make a good alternative pet for households without small children (I am allergic to cats), but need to be kept in pairs or more unless you have a lot of time to spend with them. I work from home...

At the moment we have a cat and a dog.

Smelly dog is a bulldog, hes thick as a plank but lovely, when our son cries he takes a stuffed toy over to comfort him, well, or he is attempting to suffocate him. He is very very lazy, if you shout walkie he will sometimes hide under our bed! His favourite thing is most definitely sleeping.

Kitty cat is a ragdoll, she knows sit, lay, roll over, high five and stop. She is an evil over lord.

We have two giant lop rabbits, both boys, they are our resident lawn maintenance team, they both like sleeping on the dog and blocking the cats catflap tunnel.

Dog two comes home in August, a blue staffy who we are thinking of calling Rupert.

Our two Cats are without doubt the most important things in our lives. Our lives revolve around them and if they are unwell we feel really bad also...very similar really to feelings you have for your young babes and children....We never go out too long because we miss them but they are normally asleep but hey ho....Saber is 7 years now but when he was less than 1 year old he got bacteria pneumonia and was struck down quickly with a very serious illness the vet was fantastic but said she did not know if he would make it...he did and got better over a few weeks without little after effects... he has without doubt brought so much love into our home ,he is overwhelming in his love for my husband especially, always chose him over me but never mind.....(sour grapes a little)
Then we have Girlze aged 10 whom we rescued at 6 young weeks of age and it took us two weeks to realise the rice in her bed was in fact tapeworm...not good for a little kitten but with vet treatment she got through that ok...little mink she was for a good few years but adorable... .since moving over to France she has gone from jackel and hyde to a real softee puss..loves things like cuddles on laps and that she would never have done before....I think the new experience of the log fire which was her first winter here when we arrived in the Dec14 set a president for future comforts for her and she has got more and more relaxed as well as not biting so much now.......that's a saving on the plasters....we have 4 large hens now also for the cats to put up with....we had little ones and ducks before so it was not too much of a shock when we got them...just the size put them off I guess....Our cats rule all of us......hahaha

Two elderly rescue cats. I've had them for 13 years and fortunately they are still in reasonably good health for their age. Dark torties (mainly black with a bit of ginger) sisters from the same litter.

My mum still has our old tortoise. Been in the family many, many years and my parents inherited it about 40 years ago and still going strong so hopefully many more years yet. Comes to stay with me for a week or so every summer just for a change of scenery for it. He doesn't really enjoy his time here as no runner bean plants to eat or veggie patch to destroy so spends his time bulldozing through my plants instead!
Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free :)

One rather podgy and utterly spoiled cat. She turned up on our doorstep as a stray and we took her in on a temporary basis (husband is mildly allergic to cats). Two years and numerous vet bills later, she's a permanent fixture.

I grew up with cats and our house seemed empty without one. Needless to say within a few days he'd fallen in love with the wee rascal and she now has all four paws well and truly under the table!

Luger, nearly 2 year old mini Schnauzer. hes a loving dog but certainly keeps us on our toes, he's very energetic. Oscar, 7 year old mini lop, and Baby, 6 year old mini lop. Both very chilled out bunnies, so chilled out that they allowed a fledgling jackdaw to take up residence in their hutch for 4 days last week

I'm really impressed that so many MSE-ers have rescued, re-homed and/or adopted animals .

I have an 18 year old cat called Tess, she originally was born in the RSPCA shelter and then homed to a couple who had a baby who apparently was allergic to Tess and her brother, so I took them at 23 months.

She won a lifetime achievement award in 2010's Cats Protection Rescue Cat Awards, and sent me to London to collect it on her behalf! She now has CKD & has been diagnosed for 9 months but is doing really well with no decline at all.

I also just lost my rescue dog, Chaya. She came to me 7.5yrs ago and had been found straying. She was a fantastic dog and I just had to let her go on 15th, she was 12.5yrs old but had a good life with me, at least. She started off life named Tiger, then the rescue named her Pixie due to not knowing her original name, and I went with Chaya

I did a thread when I got her (Cavalier King Charles in flat) if anyone's interested, it ran for a long time and I got some excellent advice. She didn't turn out to be a Cav, but a Staffy (my favourite breed) and she truely was amazing

I'm so lucky to have had/have them both and what a great thread!
