Direct debit fee

Have just moved into a house and when signing contract we advised the direct debit date wasn't OK and would like to move it to 1st of every month, the letting agent told us to ring the office to change it.
Have called today and the agency want to charge £60 to change the direct debit date. Is this normal?

What do you mean that the direct debit date was not ok? Was it not going to be set up for the date you are contractually obligated to pay rent on/by?
LA have admin fees for pretty much everything so yes I'm not surprised they want to charge you £60. You could always set up a standing order to pay the rent at your end therefore negating the need for the LA to do anything.0 -
As Pixie says, set up a SO instead. I think rent is one of the types of payment where a DD is a bad idea, it's far better to be in control yourself, which you will be with a SO.0

Wrong title, this is an admin fee - There are no dd fees.I am not a cat (But my friend is)0

Cancel the DD.
Set up a Standing Order.
However, remember that rent is due on the date specified on your tenancy agreement, not necessarily on the 1st of the month (or any other date you happen to select ie your pay date).
You don't pay for your shopping on the 1st, you pay when you shop.0 -
Any agent who collects rent via DD needs shooting anyway. There was a post on here about a year ago where a tenant did a fraudulent chargeback. Not sure what happened in the end, but potentially the LL lost thousands."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0
