Is it too soon to claim on house insurance?

My toddler broke our telly a month ago by pulling it off the unit. We took it as a lesson learned and bought a new one, and some safety straps to secure it to the cabinet. We also renewed our house insurance with a new company and made sure we included accidental damage too! This was all put in place last week. First payment is due out of my account in a few weeks.

Unbelievably, two days ago, a toy was thrown and hit the tv. The screen is now smashed again 🙈 I'm worried if I ring our house insurance they might think it's a suspicious claim? When actually I just have two little boys who are really boisterous! My policy covers me from the first day so technically I should be covered, right? I could really do without paying another £600 on a new tv again.

You need to speak to your Insurers ASAP. Don't delay, as you have to report any possible claims within reasonable time in line with your policy. The TV won't just be replaced and it will probably be taken to Insurers inspection company. They will check the damage to see whether it matches what you say happened and they will also check to see if it can be repaired or needs replacing.

Being that it is a newish TV, they might not think you would deliberately break it, but they might ask you for previous Insurance details, to see whether you took out Insurance, because you did not have it previously to cover an accident that happened.

Think your next TV needs to be installed high on a wall somewhere.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

As noted by huckster, make your insurer aware straight away. It may well be that your insurer will wish to investigate matters with a claim being made so near to policy inception, however once they obtain a receipt / invoice and send the unit for inspection to verify cause of damage, concerns would likely be alleviated.

If you're up front with them, then there's nothing to be concerned about.

    These things happen, it's life.

If you explain the situation and do not delay doing so, they probably see enough fraudulent claims to see that yours is genuine.
