Edinburgh Festival

Options
Planning a trip to Edinburgh for festival. I know it will be expensive to stay in the city but where is a good place to search for on the outskirts with good transport links or not too far in a taxi. We need accommodation for 4 adults. Last time we went it rained solidly for 3 days and it would have been good to have a hotel in easier reach to dry out during the day. Any advice or recommendation of places would be good. No hostels please my hostelling days are over.

The first thing to say is that you have left it very late to fine anything, we have been to Edinburgh three times during the festival, once when left it to June to book we ended up staying in Glasgow and travelling back and forth each day and once we ended up in a flea pit of a hotel behind Waverley station where the rooms were so small you could touch three of the four walls whilst lying in bed.

On that basis, where you stay may be slightly more academic than if you can find anywhere, it is slightly better midweek than the weekend, indeed my neighbour has gone to Edinburgh this morning for 4 days, a month before the festival, having not been able to find anywhere for last weekend!

The route between the city and that airport so Corstorphine Road/ St Johns Road has plenty of small hotels and B & B's with excellent bus service into the city. The new tram route to the south of the main road passing Murrayfield, Stenhouse and Gyle would offer easy access but my view is you may have to take whatever you can at this stage. Good luck!

Thanks. I know it's late but I like a challenge. What was the Glasgow Edinburgh journey like? Is there a late night service?

Ceewash, we used Scottish Citylink coaches, they run every 15 -30 minutes throughout the day until midnight and then at specified times until around 0300. By then if you have spent the day at the festival bars, you really need to get to bed! Good luck in your search.
