Daughter going to Sydney for a Year

My daughter is going to Sydney next month for a year. She has tickets, visa's, work permits etc. However as she is getting organised now wanted to ask what she needs to take with her in way of insurance etc.
She will be staying with friends in Sydney for a few weeks to accommodation and hopefully work will be sorted out. She knows she needs to register with a doctor and a bank over there.
Does she get yearly travel insurance or something else. Is she best getting a sim card over there as opposed to using her UK sim. How much clothing should she take, is she best taking her clothes from home or travelling light and buying over there.
Any advise on what she needs to do/take with her before she flies out would be greatly appreciated.

Annual travel insurance policies have a maximum trip length (possibly 30-45 days) so would not cover for being away for a year (you can read up on Stephanie Inglis who bought an annual policy before going on an extended trip and insurance refused to pay medical expenses)
Best to look at the backpackers-type policies such as WorldNomads or similar (is not only for backpackers but cover long durations)0 -
To live and work in Australia for a year your daughter will need an Australian mobile phone SIM for local use. If she also wants to keep her UK number on, a dual SIM handset would be useful, but roaming charges will be hefty unless something like the Three network's 'Feel at Home' service is used for the first few months (I think it covers Australia). However there are plenty of economical way to call an Australian number from UK.Evolution, not revolution0

I would take my clothes with me!
I never find the choice of clothes there is in UK.
My daughter has lived in Sydney for many years and still does all her shopping in the UKtravelover0 -
My DD is in Sydney, she went for a year, came home for about a year & went back a year ago.
She uses a local SIM card in an unlocked iPhone; we did the same thing when we spent 3 weeks with her earlier this year, £8.99 to unlock my phone and a PAYG sim. We chat weekly either in FaceTime or Skype and what's app all the time.
She buys very little clothing over there, she says it's quite expensive. She took one large hold-all with her and when we visited, we took a fair amount of clothing for her, undies from Primark, some tops & trousers from New Look & Next. We also took face wipes and dry shampoo as she either can't buy them there or they are very expensive to buy.
She's home for 2 weeks later in the year so she'll go shopping to stock up on undies etc to take back with her. She also says trainers are expensive so we took a pair over too.
I can't help with insurance as I'm not too sure what she did.0 -
She needs to get her travel insurance asap. The cost of the tickets and possibly other expenses are already at risk and need to be covered now.0
