travelodge system down - cant stay

has anyone any experience of this?
Didn't have a reservation, tried to get a room for the night.
The system was down so they wouldn't book me. not best pleased.
surely they have to have an alternative process, there must be lots of motorway drivers who decide at last minute to stop.
what do they do?

Normally the system will be working and they'll take bookings. If the system is down they probably can't see anything or even know which rooms are free. Undoubtedly the person stuck with working there overnight will not have the authority to do anything except via the computer.0
