Avoid them. The system really needs an annual pressure/leak test. Some places are doing tests and recharge for under £50.

thanks conor. why can't you use the gauge that comes with it and top it up that way?
it supposed to have leak sealer and oil in the canister.

    apologise for any naivety.

  • I agree totally, I used to run a garage and air con work has serious dangers.

Pay the local garage £50 and get it done properly.

Basically because it can't provide a constant pressure, isn't remotely calibrated and is there to "give a rough idea" and the leak sealer is like putting radweld in a car - can cause more problems than it cures.
  • Blimey, I didn't know a DIY kit for this existed. Its dangerous stuff and I thought (though I confess I'm not 100% sure) you had to be licensed to handle the refrigerant. I had my car converted from R-12 (old gfas) to R-134 (new gas) and I’m sure the guy was telling me that he was telling me about the licensing. Course, I might be a dupe and he might just have been protecting his livelihood, seemed genuine though.

Anyway, apologies if my post is a bit low on science but for me it’s one of those jobs I’d rather be parting with my £50 for.
My eyes! The goggles do nothing!

Its probably one of those things where you require a licence if you are using the stuff as part of your job but you dont need one if you are using it as someone doing DIY.

Like the above, dont attempt to diy as you need proper equipment for it. Kwik fit do it for £45. Aircon only need re-gassing every 2-3 yrs therefore you are paying about £15 per year. I had my car done at kwik fit and its good n cold, it was done for free because my next door neighbour is the manager :) Got him some beers.
