Ernest Jones Eternity Ring

Hi - we bought an eternity ring for my wife from Ernest Jones in May 2015. It cost nearly £2,000 - so a large investment!
My wife woke up this morning to find one of the diamonds has fallen out and we cannot find it.
This is not what I expected from a ring only 14 months old. It's meant to be an eternity ring - to last forever!
I phoned them up and was told tough luck - you didn't take out an extended warranty - so my only option is to pay for a new diamond to be set etc which I suspect will cost me many £100's.
I have found myself being angry all day - I am astonished that such an expensive item can be sold with such an obvious flaw / lack of quality - it simply shouldn't happen that the diamond can pop out should it?
In people's experiences, what options do I have here? The ring was only14 months old!
Many thanks all

Does she wear it all the time?0 -
Yes she sleeps with it on most of the time and rarely takes it off0

I presume you believe the item was inherently faulty - in other words there was a fault when you purchased it that manifested itself later such that a stone fell out.
However the onus will be on you to prove that is the case, on the balance of probability. Part of your evidence will presumably be a statement from your wife confirming she did not damage (or misuse) the ring in any way as far as she is aware. However whether that would be sufficient is another matter. If you can get an expert (e.g. an experienced jeweller) saying that stones falling out after 14 months are normally the result of an inherent fault that may help your case.
How did you pay for the item? If it was by credit card then read:

Do you have a picture of the type of ring?
I have an eternity ring, which has been on my finger for 4 years. The diamonds are set into the ring, and despite being battered and bashed, I have yet to lose a diamond.
They are supposed to be quite resilient, but as it is more than 6 months old, it will be up to you to prove that it was inherently faulty. Take it to an independent jeweller, who will look for signs of abuse (dents, scratches) and if there are none, then it was no doubt not made properly.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
It must be in the bedroom somewhere, it didn't just disappear.0
-
That's assuming it was lost in the bedroom, it could have fallen out at any time and that was the first time she noticed.0

If it has claw set diamonds i wouldn't recommend wearing it in bed. I have a diamond set eternity ring which i wear every day but i never wear it in bed. My diamonds are channel set though.
Can you claim on your house insurance ? Can't see you getting any joy anywhere else.
By the way, eternity rings aren't meant to last forever, it's just a name. In the US they're called Anniversary rings.0 -
Thanks everyone for your advice. I do believe it was inherently faulty - I can't believe £2000 can be spent on something that starts to fall apart after a year.
I am going to start with a letter to Ernest Jones followed by a view from an independent jewellers.
Also - did not pay by credit card - used card to buy gift vouchers which I got discounted through work.
I tried to upload photos but site won't let me! It's a full eternity ring - with set diamonds (not claw.)0 -
