You are better to have a phone for each jurisdiction. I have an Eircell phone for the south (or Vodafone as they like to call it now) and a BT Cellnet phone for the north (or O2 as they like to style it these days).0

Three payg does all in one add-ons which allow use in "feel at home" destinations as if you were in the UK.
I've used Three sims in the US and France without problems - it just uses the call/data allowance as if you were in the UK. Downside is that you need some credit as well to call local or geographic/premium numbers, as they aren't included in the allowance.
But a tenner for a gig of data and 100 minutes of calls isn't bad, when you're travelling - assuming you're calling the UK mostly, that is.0 -

sorry but thats quite a dated statement given that so many providers as already stated above offer free roaming & totally impractical to have 2 numbers / phones0 -
