    Hi there

    How about:-
    pasta/rice
onions.... slice and layer with pots, add some stock and cover with foil, bake in oven until soft, remove foil and crisp up... a great cheap tasy, filler with some HM bread
Baked beans - either on toast or use with a bit of mince and pasta to make a pasta bake

    Hi there

the pots n onion are a great "filler" and 1 of my faves, when you have extra money, you can put bacon on top for the last few minutes, breast of lamb on top at the beggining so all the flavour soaks in, or even cornedbeef in the middle layer... you can also use milk instead of stock too..there are loads of twists you can do with it....

  • i was also thinking of making things like quiches as my birthday friday and my little sis has giving me a quiche tin(i asked for it) my other sis gave me bread maker (turning into ms practical as i get older)
    Are quiches easy to make?

    Hi there

    Yep they are really easy,

Just line the tin with shortcrust pastry...and !!!!! the bottom with a fork, place in a pre-heated oven -on a hot baking sheet for about 10-15 mins

When you take it out, brush the bottom with beaten egg white (just use a bit of the eggs you are gonna use later)and allow to dry -it stops "soggy bottom"

You can use what ingredients you like (drained tin tuna, mushrooms etc)
For a basic one i would gently fry some chopped up bacon pieces and then add some sliced onions, and cook until soft ... pile into the case and mix eggs and milk together with seasoning..the easiest way i have found to figure how much liquid you need, is to use a measuring jug to pour water into your tin before you start and then use about 1/2 that amount as you will have filling in the way...
I would guess 2 eggs to 1/2pt milk...you may need an extra egg if you use lowfat milk,
Pour this in -not quite to the top.... and grate a bit of cheese on top... the stronger cheese you have, the less you can get away with ;)
And then just bake until the centre is just set...
You can adjust the fillings to what you like....

Another thing you could do, is make some mashed potato, mix in plenty of fried onions and some strong cheese and pile it into the pastry case...lovely warm with beans:D

If you need help with my waffling - just let me know :p

From experience I'd spend nothing at all (except maybe the onion and potato) and see how far you get with what you've got in... you never know what the money might be needed for, emergency bus fares etc. But you can prob do a lot with what you've got... how about posting a list and we'll see how we can help?
  • go to asda at night(say 9pm) because they usually have reduced items near or at the front of the store

To be honest I would do the store cupboard challenge. Try and use everything up you have in your cupboards, fridge and freezer and use the £10.50 you have to buy only what you really, really need to supplement what you already have.

PS - beg a meal or to at family or friends if you can - I used to do this when I was a student. My eldest brother used to comment the only time he would see me was when I was hungry!!!

  • and i forgot to mention that i wouldnt see the need for milk as you can have toast with your bread machine so that would be a saving
what i would go for would be: potatoes, eggs, pasta, cheap brand baked beans, reduced veg., teabags(if need be) and mince
