How can I transfer a document from word to Open Office

I have tried to cut and paste a document so I can transfer from an Old word document to Open office but that does not work. How can I transfer this document to Open Office as I no longer use word which is old 2002 version including adding coloured highlighted sections. Basically I want to use an amend the old word document.I am sure there is a simple and easy method. Any advise will appreciated. Thank you.

Im surprised Open Office doesnt just open the document up?

Does it give an error message when trying to open it?

I have both Open Office and Libre Office and have no problems opening documents saved in MS Word. Sometimes the formatting might be slightly out but they do open.

Open it using Open Office, then save it in the Open Office format.

Find the document in a folder view, right-click, and select Open with ...

Then select Open Office from the list of programs, or use the find dialogue to find the program (in Program Files, usually) if it's not listed
