I've recently bought a new laptop and want to have MSN messenger on it. The only problem I'm having is that I'm on dial-up (because of where I live) and so it says that it estimates a download of 4 hours. My computer disconnects from the internet after about an hour and a half. I'm a bit confused as to what I can do now.

Maybe some nice person can download it for you, burn it to CD and then send you the CD.
Otherwise, if you use the Opera browser, it easy to resume most downloads after a disconnection.0 -
Have you got auto disconnect selected? Check the properties of dial up, and uncheck it if it's selected. Might be a solution?0

Some dial up isp's auto disconnect (virgin used to) after a certain period of inactivity, whether downloading or not and you can't change this. It used to drive me mental when I was on dial-up. However, It never took me 4 hours to download msn, more like an hour!
I agree with above post check it's not set to auto-disconnect (that can be changed, whereas the isp one can't) otherwise just get someone to put it on cd for you and load it off that, I might be wrong but I think windows live messenger (upgrade to msn) is about 35mb.Fr. Stack: While you were out, I got the keys to your car. And drove it into a big wall. And if you don't like it, tough. I've had my fun, and that's all that matters.0 -
Dial up takes about 4-5 mins per MB. Download size is from 17.2 MB - 35.2 MB.0

You can also use a version of messenger whereby you login without having to download. Its called MSN web messenger and the website is here

you can also use koolim or ebuddy, but to use these two you need an msn messanger name,No Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

If need be, I can download a few different programs and save them to CD for you. Messenger, Opera, Firefox, Adobe Reader 8, WinZip/WinRAR/7Zip, Nero etc.0

Wow, thank you very much! Give me until the weekend to try and get it sorted and if not, I'll be getting back to you. Thank you very very much
