Good girl once stuff is listed I have several, one on the outside of the freezer, and several on the inside of cupboard doors as stuff gets used run a line through it.On my freezer list I list everything and as things get crossed off I have the list saved on my microsoft word programme and its easy every couple of months to update the list and print off a new one.Helps to keep you focussed on what you have in store and what you NEED to buy rather than impulse buying .We have all at some point I expect forgotten about stuff in the cupboard and bought more .Once you get stuff inventoried it does become a habit to check the lists when you are making out your menu's /shopping lists BEFORE you go to the shops :):):)I do my menus every Sunday morning first thing and have done for the past 50+ years :):):)

Good heavens girl, listen to Jackie.

Truly your freezer is your best friend. Make it a rule to rustle through your fridge at least once a week and hastily freeze anything you have bought and not used. Also when you are cooking make a habit of doing too much and freezing the excess. When you are stressed or pushed for time it's a life-saver to be able to pull a meal out of the freezer and just heat it up.

Please label everything though. You don't want to be playing freezer roulette, that results in some very peculiar meals.

Some sort of meal plan is essential. You don't have to stick to it religiously but buying stuff in case you might use it is sheer madness and leads to a great deal of waste.

    Good luck.

I actually wonder if sometimes a freezer can be more foe then enemy , its too easy to chuck stuff in the freezer and then never use it . I often see posts where people have more then one freezer to stock up on bargains ............its only a bargain if you use it .
I am seriously contemplating doing away with my chest freezer and making do with just a small one and then actually eating everything we buy

I think that this is more of a danger with a chest freezer. Things tend to sink out of sight and out of mind. I left my chest freezer when I moved home and bought an upright with drawers. It's much easier to keep things organised that way.

I agree chest freezer were very popular in the 1970s-80s with big stores like Bejams selling most of them, the size of small container lorries :) I had a square one rather like the old fashioned ice cream freezers, and it was great when I had both of my DD's at home but once they married and moved out it cost more to run and keep filled, so I got rid of mine, and changed to a single upright fridge/freezer with pull out drawers.Far more practical and less clutter in the kitchen.

Its said that the more storage space you have the more you tend to store and I think its true. Saying that I still sometimes have toppled freezer tetris to get everything in mine :):):)

Bejams - JackieO - I remember going there with my mum and not being able to see into the freezers :)

We recently got rid of our medium sized chest freezer, and I can honestly say I havn,t missed it - I was buying food to fill the freezer, which was mad...

We have an American fridge freezer with the pull out freezer drawer, and that works for us :)

Thanks all, I promise I am coming back to this, but I'm busy with the inventory! Xxx

Not to be rude or nagging Annie, but are you really coming back?

You have a history of posting that you feel that you spend too much, then run and never come back :(

If you are happy with your spends that's grand. Just cos someone can feed a million on a fish and a loaf don't mean you have to :)

However if you do feel you want to look at cutting your bills, please come back. We can help without you feeling like you have to be all or nothing

Things you can't freeze are few and far between - salady things maybe? Pretty much everything else can be kept indefinitely.

Tomatoes can go in the freezer whole for use in cooking some other time. Lettuce and cucumber can be made into soup with any other random greenery that might be in danger of going over.

I have a scrap of paper with my shopping list on it , and if I get down to the last of the washing up liquid it goes on the list. The only other things then are to check if I need salad or veg. Then give OH the list when he goes shopping.
By the time he goes each week the fridge is almost bare!
And as others said use up veg etc in soup, it's never too late to use it for soup!;)
