Banging & whining noise from taps

Hello,
I hope someone can suggest what might be wrong with my taps. The cold tap at the washbasin upstairs makes a horrendous banging noise when it is turned on, in fact the tap itself seems to move/vibrate. Also it makes a whining noise. The hot tap however seems fine.
The toilet (also upstairs) after flushing makes a similar banging and whining noise when it is re-filling.
Also, downstairs, the tap at the kitchen sink produces hot water under a fine pressure but just dribbles old cold water which seems strange as it can't be the tap itself as this is fine with cold water - it's a mixer tap.
I've just moved in so don't know how long these problems have existed. Any tips gladly received.
Many thanks in advance.
Regards

Hi
I would say you need to check the washer on your incoming main stop !!!!,and the cold on the sink mixer.
When you say 'fine pressure' do you mean it's ok ?

Hi Canucklehead,
Many thanks for your reply.
Yes, by "fine" I did mean OK.
You have me very worried by your use of exclamation marks! Should I be scared witless by these? Do you mean this may be liable to blow so that I end up with mains pressure water running through the house.....?! When you say the stop, do you mean the main stopcock and, if so, is this a simple/inexpensive thing for a plumber to fix? Is this likely also to be causing the noises from the toilet do you think?
As I'm not there permanently and can't get this looked at immediately, then assuming I can find the stopcock, I guess it would be a good idea to close that completely for periods when I'm not there.
Excuse my dimness, but when you say the "cold on the sink mixer" do you mean the washer on that tap? It is a mixer so I had thought there would only be one washer on it and can't understand why the hot water from this tap is okay but the cold water comes out so slowly and erratically.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi
If you type stop !!!! it's filtered out .
If you type stopcock it's not.
If the water can be turned off in the street outside then it's an easy job .If not then no.
A monoblock sink mixer with two individual controls ( one hot lever or handle and one cold ) will have two washers.A monoblock sink mixer with one single lever or handle has a single cartridge in it so, no it won't.
If I were to come out to this job I would start at the mains stopcock and work my way through the system until I find a problem. It would be a lot easier as I would be able to hear what's going on!

The banging noises from you upstairs tap and toilet sounds like water hammer:

Hi there,
Oh I see....duh, I didn't think about filtering out, just assumed you were emphasising a danger and I was about to be flooded by a broken water main! Thanks for the further info. If you don't mind my asking, whereabouts are you located?
Thanks too for the link about water hammer, I will read up on the info. in that link to see if that might be the problem.
Kind regards,0 -

Hi,
What a pity you're not anywhere near where I am, otherwise I would have asked if you would have liked to take this job on. Ne'er mind!
Thanks for your helpful hints though.
