My need to replace laptop, but which?

For years I have smiled when reading a heading "which laptop should I buy?" and here I am, hardly daring to utter those words, but I think I need to.

Currently, my umpteen years old Acer Aspire 9420 with Vista Ultimate has served me well, but in the last few days, I appear to have damaged it. Normally it would remain on my desk and I pull the lid down to avoid any dust on keyboard etc. Except when we're going on holiday when I disconnect from mains, ethernet and place it in a case and hide it. But I must have given it a bump. Today when closing the lid, I felt resistance. Something in the bottom right fell out, plastic debris. We unscrewed the small screws but could remove the screen frame so replaced them. When I attempt to close the lid, the frame opens from main lid, so something is loose inside. Yes I know I could take it to be repaired, but cant close it and we don't drive, so rather than embark on a crusade to try and repair, may well seek out a replacement.

I don't download films/video's or music, neither is it used for gaming, just simple everyday surfing. I do have an ipad & mobile but iseally would like to replace this.

Any suggestions would be welcome. We only have a Curry's in our town, so will have to buy on-line.

    Have you considered a Chromebook?

I have a Toshiba 13.3" and is very impressive and quicker to start up than a laptop

Oddly enough, yes, sometime ago I thought, "if ever I need to replace etc", but reducing the size of screen from 17" might seem too severe. 15" might be ok.

Personally I find the Chromebook format too restricting - never enough USB sockets, for example.
