Easy to maintain budgie cage

Options
Hi, my dad (76) has expressed an interest in having a pet budgie. We had them when I was growing up, we've always been a family of pet lovers. He lives in sheltered accommodation so can't have a dog or cat. One of his neighbours has a budgie and mentioned that a friend of his was looking to rehome one and my dad got quite interested.
Nothing has come of this budgie needing a new home so dd is thinking about maybe getting him one for his birthday next week. We will obviously be helping him with cleaning the bird out but as my dad is fiercely independent, I would like to get him a cage that is easy to maintain/clean out.
We're still just thinking about this and nothing is definite yet, we won't do anything rash and will sound him out and if we get the impression he isn't keen we won't buy one. Can anyone recommend a cage suitable please?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice offered.

Get one with a large enough deep base in it. More than about two inches deep. There are cages that you can buy that have a base less than half an inch deep which would wouldn't be suitable.

The larger the base the easier it is to hold on to pull out dump the contents into a bin bag and replace. If you put down newspaper and a very small amount of litter on the bottom of the cage then it won't require too much cleaning and it will be easy to reinsert the base back into the cage.

Shop around the pet stores and try pulling the base out and find out for yourself how easy or hard it is.

Thank you for the reply. Good thinking on going around the pet shops, we have a few in the area so will have a good selection to trial. I remember when we had the growing up we uses bagged sand on the bottom of the cage rather than the sheets, it makes sense to line the bottom first so he can do a quick change when required and leave the cleaning for us to do once a week.

We used sand sheets for our budgies- no loose sand and easy to change.

We've always used sand sheets when we've had birds but I know my brother was always a fan of using the loose sand, I'll have to see what my dads preference is, I'll get both and give him a chance to try both then go from there.
