Hi
This may seem a stupid question but it's been bugging me for a while.
The FTSE-100 closed at 6,134.10 but what does that mean? Is it based on the average market capitalisation of the top 100 shares or some other jiggery pokery?

Yes, it is the market capitalisation divided by an arbitary number that was set at the creation of the index. Here's the rules:-

indeed so: it is the sum of the capitalisation of the top 100 shares divided by a number that made the index a convenient number when it started some years ago0
