removing garage and adding carport

We live in a 50's semi in London. There's a garage behind, accessed from the front via a driveway between us and the neighbour. The garage is ugly and in bad condition. It's also small - we can just fit the car in, provided is parked 2" from one side and we then have to climb out the other side and edge out sideways. The concrete slab is crumbling and there is damp coming up from the floor as well as drips through the roof. It's not really suitable for storage because of its condition.
If we replaced it with a carport we could gain a bit over a foot in width, which would make it easier to use. I think we'd end up with something more attractive. That is to say, it couldn't be less attractive, and I'd paint it a nice colour and/or grow plants over it.
Is it madness to replace a garage with a carport? Would we reduce the value of our home? We'd end up with the same amount of off street parking - one car's worth. It'd need to have a solid back and I'd wondered about putting in a row of storage cupboards there, which would replace the tiny amount of storage we have in the current garage (as we do keep a car in it).

If the garage is as bad as you say it is then it currently has no added value. It's scrap....
Removing it wouldn't affect the value and adding a good quality new carport would then increase the value.
If you replaced it with a bigger garage you'd add more value but it would cost significantly more so I'd go with the carport.
It sounds like you need a secure shed if you need storage space. A shed adds no value as you can take it with you when you leave.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.
