When should we start looking at/booking wedding venues for 2019 wedding?

We are planning to get married on our 10th anniversary which will be Jan 2019. We could do it a year before but thought the 10th anniversary date would be a nice idea. I have a few venues in mind to check out. I am just wondering when would be a good time to start officially planning the wedding? I know that its way too soon to book a registrar but how soon do a lot of venues need in advance?

The wedding is 2 and a half years away.

I know nothing about weddings so any tips and advice would be very appreciated. Thanks :)

A popular venue will be booked at least a year in advance - though January will not be so much in demand. In fact, many venues offer discount on "winter weddings". You can definitely visit venues now and inquire about their availability for your dates. My daughter was told by the planner at her venue that most weddings are planned in 9-12 months. She had 8 months to plan officially, but was very organised and had a wedding "file" with lots of ideas for dresses, flowers, cakes etc that was started months earlier.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

A wedding can be exactly what kind of a day you want.

The big event at a major venue isn't obligatory.

There is a Weddings board on here - people's choices range from a few people at the RO and a pub meal afterwards to hundreds of guests at a five star hotel - think about what you two would like.

2 and a half years away...I'd start booking most things about 6 months before the date but it really depends on the venue. Some venue's and service providers will require more than a years notice.

My DD booked her venue a year in advance, she had a May wedding over a bank holiday weekend so possibly a busy time.

You can start looking but do venue's have a diary going that far in advance? I suppose some do if they are particularly popular. Maybe you list out what kind of wedding you want, which will determine what kind of venue you have.

Good luck with it all, how exciting

I had just over 3 years between my engagement and wedding date. I choose the venue pretty much straight away and they let me book in the June 2010 for a wedding April 2013

I personally wouldn't leave it till 6 months before as most suppliers will be booked up by then but that's just me I like to be organised. The latest I had everything booked by was a year before and that was the balloons lol

A popular venue can have the best dates booked up 2-3 years in advance if thru open their diary that soon. So if you have a key date in mind then look at venues as soon as you can, or ring some to find out when they open their 2019 diary. Photographers and sone other key suppliers can take bookings a couple of years in advance but generally you should be fine to start planning a year before.

I booked everything for my wedding happening this August back in January 2014 so 2 and a half years ago.

This has actually worked out really good because most of the suppliers and venue have charged me for 2013/2014 season costs including the food they have honoured the price of £35 a head whereas now the cheapest price is £47 a head so if you have the time to book in advance I would say do it.
Also, the photographer was £600 back then and now charges £1400 for the same package I am having!
If you can lock in at today's prices it might save you a fortune to waiting until later.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies. I am going to call and email venues we are interested in to arrange viewing, get prices, see if they are accepting bookings for 2019 already etc.

We are hoping to book a photographer and the venue before the end of the year/start of next

Is there a reason to wait an extra year besides it being nice to do it on a ten year anniversary? I hate to be the party pooper but what if something happened in that extra year where being married would have come in really handy?
