Does anyone buy in bulk for their pantry?

As far a butter or flour going off, you can freeze both items when you find them on sale. I usually freeze flour to kill any creepy crawlies.:eek:Overprepare, then go with the flow.

Suki.. you could donate the excess to charity or foodbanks or the local church.. to save waste..
Bulk buying is my monthly shop.. 10Kg pasta, 25Kg potatoes, 60 eggs etc.. I couldn't have more than 2-3 weeks worth of food in because I simply don't have the room.. I do stash loo rolls, they have a place.. and will take advantage of offers/reductions where possible.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Pigpen, as fast as I get through them, she replaces them
Right now she's a thing for onion relish. There are FIVE jars opened in the larder and fridge and 4 jars on standby Oh and this week for some reason there are four jars of English mustard turned up:eek:
Also ATM she's got a thing going for jersey royals, four bags in the fridge. I and DH detest them. She's paying a fortune for them and I'm boiling them and frying in the pan as chips:rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Back in Feb when my husband was visiting son and daughter in law in Dubai, my "get those jobs done" thread included sorting out the pantry. When it was completely lovely, I took a picture of it and sent it to my son, who laughed and said (not unkindly) that it was typical of an older person to keep things "just in case". I replied that all those jars contained the stuff I use most often (in most cases), like rice, pasta, lentils, barley, flour, etc...

My Mum's a sucker for those extremely expensive jars of pickles & preserves that you can buy in garden centres.Right now she's a thing for onion relish. She was going to throw out a jar of ginger curd as it was coming up to the 'best before' date at the end of the month - it was unopened.
I took it home and am using it in my plain porridge - it's heavenly!0 -
I love my pantry too, it allows me to take advantage of special price items I see. I've got loads of lasagne sheets in their when I saw them at 19p for 500g, Sainsbobs were stopping selling to I took advantage and got 2 years supply, they will still be in date in Dec 2017 their cheapest is now 85p. This week I saw they'd reduced their basic brown sauce which we use to 25p so I got 3 bottles, I think they may also stopped selling this. I have a stock of coffee because it was 50p a jar less than my usual price. In Heron foods I often get item which are its here at this price and will not be next week, they are like a clearing shop. So I often get is at half price so will buy afew at a time. I bought beetroot when it was 29p a vacuum pack at Aldi weeks ago if not months and I've used it, I'm down to my last 3 pack and I've not had to pay 75p which is the price it's been since the special sale. I knew at the time it was a good price and we use about a pack a week so I did a bulk purchase. It will be out of date in August but will be used before then and a friend then keeps me in supply from her allotment. In a month or so it will be jam and chutney time for me when I can get items at give away prices, I've already got my stock of sugar at 39p a kilo for the jam, make your pantry work for you.
I would not bulk buy full price items which stay the same price for months. Why pay full price when you may get it YS

Thanks everyone, some really interesting points here.
So basically i shouldnt stock up on flour (unless i freeze it), but rice/lentils/pasta are the easiest to keep. We mainly eat these things, which is good!
I think I'll do as HOWMUCH does make the most of the special offers/good deals and stock up on things that i can get for cheap.
I am so looking forward to having a pantry!0 -

We were given a jar of this last week - it is gorgeous!
Regarding filling the store cupboard, I buy when things are on special offer - saves a lot that way.0 -
We are a family of 4, with children aged 6 and 4, who eat like birds. Plus the children have breakfast and lunch at school, so there isn't much point in bulk buying.
I do get rice, pasta, laundry detergent etc from Costco. It has cut our shopping bill down, but indirectly. Our shopping bill is still the same each week, but occasionally, we've lasted two weeks without shopping (except for bread/milk/eggs). That's because we've had enough store cupboard ingredients to knock up enough decent meals.
I would also say in addition to space, take vermin into account. I bought 6 packs of pasta from Costco and a mouse/mice nibbled through every pack so I threw them away.0 -
Where do weevils/mites come from? Only had them once in some rice and scrubbed the whole cupboard out...yuk !!!! Now i'm obsessive about them and i've thrown flour away that i've hardly used 'just in case' many times...not very mse !!:(Best headline ever on local paper??
