OK my PC is now over 10 years old.... First PC i have not changed the CPU and board in.
I used to be upgrading everything every few months.

So its been a long time since i last looked at whats available and spotted a few on here that seem to be up on what works and whats overpriced.

Current PC, AMD X64 Dual 5200, 8GB DDR2. After getting my 3D printer i find myself working more with fairly sizeable 3D models and editing one yesterday took several minutes for a fairly small movement of a part.

With other projects on the go my pocket money is stretched every whichway :) Can i get something better for £100, £150 and £200.

I have a 750GTX or is it a 750Ti? (one of those),so video should be OK. I have an H100i cooler also, SSD and RAID drives with a NAS setup.

So i think just a mainboard bundle.

Whats going to be a good value improvement with those 3 prices in mind?
£100, £15 and £200. I dont play games So just basic computing and 3D programs like Meshmixer, FreeCad and 3D printer software etc.

Thanks.

PS.. I also run VM's with Linux and various older OS's etc.

Not recommend anything under intel i5. you will need CPU, Mobo and RAM. You will be looking at £250...
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    CPU: Intel Core i5-6400 2.7GHz Quad-Core Processor (£150.79 @ Kustom PCs)
Motherboard: Asus B150M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£54.05 @ Amazon UK)
    Memory: Kingston FURY 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory (£49.38 @ Amazon UK)
    Total: £254.22
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

AMD was a good option, but they are changing to AM4 socket replacing AM3+ and FM2+ socket soon, no point of getting old tech now.

Alternatively, you can look for second hand 3rd gen/ 4th gen i5. They are faster than most of the AMD.

Thanks, So anything less than £250 or a i5 2.7GHz not worth upgrading to in your opinion?

The upgrade will have to wait a bit then, more important toys to buy first.

I will keep my eyes open for a used bargain.

Whats the AMD 6300? (the 6 core one like) I was looking at one of those a while back. AMD 6 or 8 core, any idea how far off the socket change will be? August or more like October?

    Thanks.

PS.. Will there be bargains with the old sockets? I wont be upgrading for a good while so the chance of the sockets being upgraded again before i want an upgrade is likely..

Older socket not so much of an issue, unless the new ones will have a big boost in performance?

    Thanks again..

Any upgrade will be an improvement from your existing. They never reduce the price for existing socket.

Personally will skip FX6300 and go FX8320.
Do your case hold ATX motherboard?

My reply seems to have vanished?

Yes it will take an ATX board, I have spare cases also. Had a quick look at the CPU prices and the 6300 is quite a bit cheaper than the 8320, i did see the 8320E but it seems a cut down version for a fe pennies less 80p? So it seems thats not worth the saving half the cache?

For £85 i can get the 6300 and a free 120GB SSD. Where the 8320 is £113 on its own? Is the 8320's 2 extra cores worth it?

Do you know of a cheaper board with 6 SATA connections? Most appear to only have 4. Although only had a quick look at present.

    Thanks.

I spent some time putting various combinations into Partpicker .
If you pick the 'browse individual parts' tab, you can pick motherboard and then specify exactly which connections you require, added bonus is that it will give price/suppliers, but it is not a complete list.
I did all this recently because I required a pci slot on my new motherboard which are now not so common.
Do be aware that it pays to check the manufacturers site, because it was not always 100% accurate regarding the number of connections.

ps. I also used Flubit to save around £25 on processor and motherboard.
    Move along, nothing to see.

That board ID seems to ring a bell. Do you think the 8320 ia worth the extra cost over the FX6300 +freeSSD?

Just looked on Amazon and it shows 6 SATA ports, without zooming in it looked like 4.

the 8320 will be a considerable improvement over the 6300 for what you are using it for. you already have graphics so no need for the inbuilt on the 6300 which would be inferior to your existing gpu.
the 8320 and a decent board will come in at your top budget whereas the i5 solution will not.

    FX6300 doesnt have internal graphics?

But £28 and a free SSD less than the 8320. Although i have an SSD and RAID already, but you can never have too many SSD's :)

I could use if for the swapfile or paging files and temp files etc.
