Legal cover

I usually take out legal protection cover with either my car or home insurance policy - but not both. I assumed either would give you similar types of cover. But this time i read the small print and found (and im sure many of you wont be massively surprised) that my car legal policy only covers for motor-related issues - and the home legal cover for house related stuff.

My question is can you buy legal cover seperately thatll give you the most common types of protection -motor, home, employment etc? So i could just buy one policy to protect the whole family.

If so, where would i find it??

Thanks:)

DAS and other legal expenses Insurers offer a variety of different products. Up to you to research to see whether there is one product better or cheaper than just buying the legal add ons to each policy. Usually it is cheaper to buy the policy add ons, than a separate legal expenses policy that covers most things.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Are you sure that your home legal cover only covers you for home related claims? It is fairly common for home insurance legal cover to also cover you for employment claims. If your policy doesn't, I wouldn't have thought it would be too difficult to find one that will. Either way, a lot of actual home insurance legal cover policies are through DAS anyway, so if you're looking for an entirely separate policy they would certainly be one of the viable options. Other options would include Co-op, ARAG and DLG.

I think they mean the home one will not cover motoring issues.

It varies from insurer to insurer. Some home insurance legal cover is extended to your immediate family. Some policies have wide coverage and offer to cover motor vehicle related incidents, criminal defense, civil prosecution or defence, boundary disputes and offer a free 24/7 helpline which can be used without making a claim.

Policies will differ in whether you hire a solicitor and then are reimbursed or whether they will pay directly to the legal firm used. Please be aware that there is usually a upper limit to the cover. For example my policy states £50,000.
