Cities for finding work

Do NOT consider Aberdeen. The state of the oil industry has made it near impossible to find a job at present.0 -
Funnily enough back in 2008 before the financial crash I made the exact same choice between Southampton and Leeds as I was fed up of where I lived at the time and wanted a "change of scenery". I went to both cities and looked around for a couple of days before making my decision. In hindsight I think I made probably the wrong decision in going to Southampton because 7 months after decided to leave and return to where I am now.
When I went Southampton I had no work, knew nobody, and paid 6 months rent up front for a flat. Work took around 6 weeks to find however I had some savings to keep me going.
You might find that with Southampton you will be limited in geographical area choice for work because you have the sea on one side and New Forest national park on the other so you will forced north or east. I also found the Southampton population to be more *cough* mature than in neigbouring Portsmouth and the city had a slightly more sleepy feel than Leeds had when I went there.
If I would choose between Southampton and Leeds now I would recommend Leeds as it nearer a lot more urban areas and would offer better work and socialising opportunitites. (In my opinion) Southamption is too much of a backwater to be able to offer the same scope of opportunities as somewhere like Leeds.0 -
Birmingham never makes it onto peoples lists, despite it being the UKs second city.
The perspective of an old 70s concrete city is wrong and long gone
It is a young, dynamic, thriving city with an established financial centre, a new central transport hub with shops and restaurants that rivals anything in London - and Birmingham has more parks than Paris and canals than Venice.

2nd city :rotfl:Wouldn't that be Manchester?
Still not enough reasons to live in Brum, its bad enough to visit(by car), thankfully these days I only have to go to the NEC and ICC and once a flood for the jewellery qtr.0 -
Personally I'd go for Leeds (I would say that though as I moved over the Pennines) - thriving social scene, shopping, decent rentals, good transport in general and seems to be lots of jobs.0
