I am sort of in London, suburbs, and I will have to disagree and say it is very difficult to find work here, big cities are where the big companies are and they don't want entry level people without degrees and who just want a simple cleaning job or retail job and have over 100,000 people going for the same job.

Whereas if I were to move to a rural location, job prospects would improve because they won't be looking for a shining individual with loads of experience and skills as much as they just want to think about how you would benefit their workplace and business. and not many people live in the countryside, just that theres more chance of such places lacking facilities like healthcare, internet, and i'm talking small villages in the middle of nowhere.

Of course if you live in London and have a job its easy to say ugh its easy to get a job. Unless you been looking for work over 2 years and got only 5 interviews out of 500 jobs applied, you can't say its easy.

It might be worth taking a look at Norwich. A beautiful city with easy access to the Broads and Coast. The cost of rentals is very reasonable and employment opportunities are quite good. There has been a lot of encouragement given to new business start-ups which have/are creating new jobs. Additionally, established companies like Aviva are always looking to recruit. If you look at the home page of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, a range of jobs (not medical) are always advertised.

Norwich is just over 2 hrs to London by train and by road the improved A11 has made it more accessible.

I take it you have checked the availability of the work you describe for the area you choose ?

Cambridge is thriving too. Rents are probably more expensive there though.
It is a lovely city, (as is Norwich), a real centre for scientific research jobs in particular and London is very close by train,

I keep checking a couple of different job boards to see what decent jobs are available. I have also been talking to a couple of recruitment agencies too.

At the moment, I am weighing up between Leeds and Southampton as I do like both cities. Southampton appeals slightly more on a personal level, but Leeds has more decent jobs on offer, and slightly cheaper rents.

I think Southampton is great but I am biased because I was born and brought up there:rotfl:

If you have the funds, spend some time in the area before committing yourself.

I agree with the others, London is not an option. I lived there between 1970 and 1996 and managed financially because I spent a lot of time sharing and had the skills to get a good job teaching evening classes which paid for luxuries, holidays etc.

Why do you need to move before finding a decent job? Can't you job hunt all over and then move to where you get the job?

My contract is up where I live, so I have to move. When I move, I'll then be tied to a rental contract for a number of months in my new location (hopefully, I can find a cheap short-term contract).

Thank you everyone for all your feedback. It has been helpful.

    What about Edinburgh?

    Is that too far?

Tourist season is properly kicking in, festival starts soon, will be loads of hospitality jobs about.
