The fishing for the key could be a red herring

When the policeman pointed out the key rack he was under the "mistaken" impression that there was only the one key.

The other probability could be that no fishing took place and the key was left in the car.

The key was definitely not in the car as my wife and daughter cleaned the car every week, they kept it spotless and said they would have noticed the key somewhere in the car.

What about left in the ignition on the day it was stolen (which looks to be what the insurer is "relying" on)?

No the key that was used on that day and prior to that was still with us, the key that was recovered with the car, isn't known where it was taken from. It wasn't a key we used, that's why my wife thought we didn't have a second key.

What sort of car is it?

The reason I ask is some modern cars have the ability to record which key was used to start it and at what time / date.

This may help prove your explanation that you only had one key

Yes the insurance company said they'd be checking this and sent the key to a specialist. It is a modern car just 5 years old and I was expecting them to find it proves what I'd told them. But then they just quietly said it didn't show them anything. Frankly I found this kind of suspicious, either they should have said it contradicted me or supported me, they said neither.

You may be able to obtain the report by issuing your Insurer with a SAR.

Alteratively you can get your own test done, the main dealer may be able to do it
