Ebooks - convert files to epub

I have quite a few ebooks in various formats, particularly .lit files. I have recently acquired an ipad and want to convert the ebooks to epub format.

I see that there are various online converters and programs such as Calibre - has anyone any experience with doing this and what would you recommend please? I am a bit worried that if I pick something at random I may fill my pc with adware or something nastier!

I use Calibre to convert all my ebooks, in my case to mobi for my Kindle reader.

    I use calibre as well.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

+1 for Calibre. You can also find an add on to convert Amazon (.AZW) files to epub. Of course I only do it with the ones I've bought so I can read them on my Kobo!

Another +1 for Calibre. And if you run into any problems, check out the Calibre section on MobileRead forums for help -

Cannot fault calibre, I also believe there is an iOS version of Aldiko, which works well on android and calibre interfaces well with that http://www.aldiko.com/ I will try that on my ipad soon
