We have booked 10 days in India for November for my husband and I and a friend. We have paid a deposit of £350 each, but now its looking increasingly likely that our friend will not go. I booked the holiday for three people and I have an invoice to pay late August for the balance which is in my name. I am very worried that I will be held responsible for the full payment.
The agency have assured me that we wont be held responsible for his costs but I have nothing in writing.
Question: Could I be held responsible for the full balance?
They are also saying that he will owe a further £150 over and above the deposit if he cancels for the car hire and train reservations. Is this right?
My thanks in anticipation of advice.

Depends on the contract you signed.
A deposit is normally lost in these circumstances but there may be additional costs as you have noted, to do with things like under occupancy of rooms, group discounts, car hire or transport costs being split between fewer people.
Ask them for a full written breakdown of the costs, which you can then reclaim from your friend, he could then claim from travel insurance if the situation is covered.0 -
