Say i wanted 10k so i applied for 3-4 credit cards and maxed them all out for the 10k could i then immediately take out a balance transfer card and basically have 10k interest free for 30-40 months?

You could, assuming you could get so many cards and limits in a short period.

Alternatively, you could get 0% purchase cards, save on fees and remove the need for the additional cards.

Almost got me there, thought this was a serious question....

Of course not, deposit source is checked by lenders, they will not allow loans etc to be part of the deposit.
