Thanks to those that understood what I was getting at and giving advice.
I rang the manufacturer and a very lovely lady told me to email her the pics. I did and she was immediately back to me saying the item should not look like that after 5 years of use, let alone straight from the factory. She gave me lots of info and I took that to the supplier.
To be fair to them, despite the first few (very prompt) emails referring me back to the booklet, when I mentioned the lady at the manufacturer and enclosed her comments to them, I was furnished with a prepaid label to return. No apology, no explanation. The final line on their email made me feel somewhat despondent, telling me if the item wasn't in the exact same condition as the one I'd been sent they would not be refunding me.
It's a shame because their quick response has been excellent, but their overall customer service is flawed, leaving me no option but to buy elsewhere.
Those that supplied a link thanks, I didn't want to buy from a reseller on Amazon as it can be difficult with any after-sales if things go wrong outside of the Amazon 30 days. It's the green one with the iron and the company I went for had great reviews.0 -

The link I gave is for purchasing the cleaner directly from Amazon and not from a reseller.
For a saving in excess of £38, I would go with Amazon every time and providing that you pay with a credit card (for section 75 protection should you need it) and register for the two year Polti warranty, you shouldn't hopefully have any problems in the future.0 -

I only mentioned it as it might give more reassurance to anyone who had second thought about buying something reasonably expensive from Amazon.0

However old the stock is, there shouldn't be a build up of calcium or limescale inside a new unit that has supposedly only undergone factory testing.
These sorts of deposits can only occur from multiple uses.0 -

Whatever the reason, a return has been instigated already with a pre-paid postage label. I doubt we'll ever know how the product came to be in that condition.
No, I'm referring to a simple return , that has accidentally got put out again in error.
As is known to happen with Argos from time to time.0 -
Yes..."in error." Looking forward to OP's next update when they try to refuse a refund because "the product has clearly been used" :-)0
