whats filling my hard drive

Any one got any pointers as to where to look for deleting stuff to give me more hard drive space (only got a 60G) as space is at a premium on C drive.
have moved everything I possibly can onto an external drive but still seem to only have a few MB left and keep getting the "your computer is low on memory please delete stuff" message.
have looked at show hidden folders and doesn't come up with anything untoward.
don't want to start deleting stuff in case I delete something important to the system, have lots of files with random file names of strings of numbers and letters ie something like cg74384fhjhfje44343/hgf43g which says last modified 2008 but not sure whether to just delete random ones from years ago.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated
thanks

If you are on Windows, start with C cleaner.
You probably have GB's of cached crap that it will remove.0 -
ccleaner is a good shout, you can also use a tool called treesize to give you an overview of the size of files/folder on your disk.0

Still running XP? Have you emptied the Recycle Bin?

Download windirstat and run it to get a visual and textual description of what's there, where it is, etc.0

Another thing that often frees up a lot of space is deleting all restore points except the most recent.
Simply go to "Disk cleanup" then "more options"
Chose "system restore and shadow copies" then run the clean up.
The above is worded for Win7 but I'm sure there is a similar procedure for other versions of Windows.0 -
1. what size is the HD
2. how many programs do you have installed
3. does it really say "your computer is running low on memory"? because your HD is classed as storage not memory.0 -
I've used this tool before, it's very good for finding out what's filling up your PC - http://www.extensoft.com/?p=free_disk_analyzer0

You could use WizTree to identify which files and folders are using the most disk space and then Should I remove It to let you know which are safe to remove.
Make sure you back-up first just in case you accidentally remove something that is really needed.0 -
Hi
Well I open a command prompt box as administrator and type
del *.tmp
the first run is very quick because there is little to nothing there.
Then type
del c:\*.tmp
yet again very little happens, remembering that Ctrl + C stops the process.
Now type (and watch the result)
del c:\*.tmp /s
I also go with a ~ but that is even more dangerous. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
