A friend's dog ran into the road and was killed when hit by a car.

The driver's car insurance claimed the costs from the dog owner.

I saw a dog hit recently- it got loose from its owners and ran across a junction just after the lights changed, I think towards me and my dog. It was hit by a car which could not have avoided it which pushed it into the path of one going the other way and it was hit again.

Both drivers stopped and were a bit shaken and the dog was definitely in pain but owner picked it up, said 'we'll sort it' and carried it off.

In that case, I don't think the drivers were at fault.

You can get third party liability for £25 a year from Dog's trust for this sort of thing- we do, as we would be able to cover vets fees but do live near a busy road

What happens if a dog is hit by a car?
Is the dog owner liable for repairs to the car? What insurance covers that?

Your dog insurance should cover it as third party liability.

ETA: just read further to discover you're not insured

He is a Labrador. When you don't know what to expect from a stranger you need to know where you stand in case he thinks he can sue!!
I will take pics of his cuts. He is ok today. By the way I am worried about the dog too :) I just don't know the driver and just want to know what could happen.

Thanks for your response. It was a clear road. My daughter saw him, shouted me, I jumped up and saw it all happen. Poor dog. Poor driver.
Do I offer to pay for the car?Do I have to?

You'd have to explain further how/why he managed to get into the road. Did he escape a garden? Was he being walked off-lead? etc

If it was you driving your car, and you drove out in front of someone causing damage to their car, do you think you would be liable for their repairs?

Your dog ran in front of a car, and caused damage to said car. Of course you offer to pay - if not from a legal obligation, surely morally you feel obliged to pay?

If it were me, I would be very grateful that they were driving sensibly enough to have not killed my dog, and would be doing all I could to make sure they weren't out of pocket for an accident that wasn't their fault.

Of course, if it turns out they were driving like a maniac and breaking the law, it's a different situation - but you seem very hesitant to comment on that aspect, which gives me the impression they weren't in the wrong here.

The dog owner should pay all reasonable costs.

Why should the driver be out of pocket for an accident that wasn't their fault because I couldn't control my dog?

Do you have home insurance? I believe that has an element of 3rd party cover that will pay out in circumstances like this.
