My son has starting eating waffles for breakfast, I know its not the best breakfast but I struggle to get him to eat anything in the morning so just pleased he is eating something.

The problem is the shop brought waffles are 30% sugar:eek:

I want to make my own so I can control the amount of sugar. It is necessary to have a waffle maker or is there another method using standard kitchen items? I do could do without yet another gadget taking space in my small kitchen!

Thanks

There isn't a way to get the waffle pattern without a dedicated waffle iron. I've seen people post photos of using a griddle pan and pouring the batter into those and using it to make small indentations, but it doesn't have the look of a waffle. Could you try to convince him to eat american style pancakes? You can use the recipe you were planning to use for the waffles.

Are you sure he'd still eat them if you made them with less sugar?

Kingsmill waffles seem to have only 7% sugar.

OP, I have this waffle maker https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooks-Professional-Premium-Electric-Rotating/dp/B00L451AEA/ref=lp_3538370031_1_4?s=kitchen-appliances&ie=UTF8&qid=1467269789&sr=1-4

The drip tray comes out and the main part turns vertical so it takes up very little space in the cupboard.

I have a waffle maker that I found in a CS but have no recipe for the mix I have tried a few I found on the net but they never seem to turn out as well No instructions came with it but as it was only £2.00 it didn't owe me much .Anyone here have an infallible recipe I could try for my DGS ?

Waffles are great as a treat but I wouldn't recommend them for everyday.

I think you should save the waffles for the weekend and coax him to eat something more nutritious and slow burning for weekdays.

The sugar rush from a very sugary breakfast - and then the mid morning crash - is not great for attention spans etc.

Sometimes you have to save kids from themselves.

Yes he would eat them with less sugar. Is not the sugar he likes its the bland taste and soft texture.

The information on the front of the packet is misleading. It is 7% of daily intake (for an adult so more for a child), If you scroll down you will see the detailed information 32.4g of sugar per 100g of product, if my maths is correct that is 30% (ish)

I appreciate that, trust me I have tried. If I can reduce the sugar in the waffles (I generally cook with less sugar than a recipe calls for) then there is nothing wrong with them. I hope to sneak a bit of wholemeal flour in a homemade mix as well.

Thank you that does look quite compact. How long does it take to cook them?

I think I will try just using a mix with a frying pan as suggested first to try the taste before I invest in one.

    I think it's 3 minutes
You plug it in and a light comes on when it's heated up, then you pour in the batter, close and turn it over and another light comes on when they're done.
I buy Aunt Jemima's batter mix, but only have them as an occasional treat, otherwise I'd be twice the size I am now!
