Land Valuation Tax

Hi, I've used this site in various ways previously, which I've appreciated, but am here now to pose a question connected to house buying. In despair over the state of the housing market, and lamenting the fact I will never own again after falling out of the market due to personal circumstances some twelve years ago, I've been researching the issue online and bumped into the notion of Land Valuation Tax as a way of making things fairer and more affordable. The economists out there seem to support it as a 'progressive' tax but acknowledge that landowners would be against it as it's a cost to them. The landowners are already rich, aren't they? Apparently, the 'politics' isn't there to support it but isn't that because of the influence of the landowners? Maybe I'm missing something or am just being too simplistic but shouldn't we/Martin Lewis be campaigning for the introduction of something that might go some way to redistributing wealth in this country? MD

so personal circumstances mean you are no longer "rich" therefore you think that is justification to bring everyone else down to your level by adopting the politics of envy instead
these boards are not the place for such nonsense - maybe N Korea and embracing what is left of communism and fellowship with your socialist brothers may be a suitable alternative?0 -
You used to be a home-owner, you said?
When you were, were you "rich", as you suggest all "landowners" are?
Would you have been happy paying a %age of the nominal value of that property as tax?
Or would it just have accelerated the "personal circumstances" that saw you no longer able to own the property?
Should this proposed LVT be a new, additional tax, raising more money for the government to reduce the deficit? Or should it replace an existing tax? If so, what?
What rate would you suggest this tax be levied at?0 -
We seem to be getting a lot of threads started on here by people who seem incapable of seeing the DEBATE House Prices and the Economy board, or understanding what the word debate means.0

Debate belongs where we don't have nonsensical personal rants shoved down our throats:
on the debates forum (which I never visit).
or the discussion forum (likewise)0 -

I don't think the Debate Board is visible to anyone not signed-up, so if the OP has just been a casual user until now, they may not be aware of it.
Martin made that board invisible to Joe Public due to the number of vitriolic comments on there.....but this board doesn't seem so very different, some days!0 -
I wasn't rich before, just owned a two bed house with a mortgage, lost the house through ill health and now can't get back in. So my envy is only of those that own if they choose to. But you're right about the socialist philosophy, maybe we'll get a version of it one day. The details of LVT are for the economists, it's the principle in terms of improving housing opportunities, including renting, that I'm interested in.
And I wasn't aware of the Debate Board so thanks for the steer. But I think someone amongst that lot got me so maybe have a look at their link.0 -

Why do you assume that Martin Lewis is a socialist or communist?0 -

Thanks Dave, I didn't know that, and like G_M it's not a board I ever go to anyway (which is the main reason why I'd like to see nonsense like this taking place there).0
