Greek Rubbish/Waste crisis

I've been researching the Greek Islands this week and one thing that kept coming up on the trip advisor reviews is a problem with waste. I've done a little research, (admittedly not much) and it seems this has been an ongoing problem for some time which has recently come to head as all the landfill sites are full. There were lots of "unofficial" landfill sites set up and the EU found out and started fining Greece daily for it.
Here is the lastest pertaining to the Island of Corfu, my favourite Greek Island.
In short if you are planning a trip to Greece do your research, as many hotels and restaurants are closing because of the rubbish

Don't believe everything you read on Tripadvisor......
The Greeks have had regular bin strikes and rubbish issues over the years, and every time, people say "Oh don't go..." - well sorry, but I have to say that, in the 30 years that I have been visiting the Greek Islands, I have never found the rubbish to be an issue, and, according to friends of ours currently in Corfu, the area we are visiting again is fine.
However - we do tend to go to the less touristy resorts, so this probably makes a difference. The Greek economy in the Islands relies on tourism - there is no way they will risk that for too long if there is any problem.
Anyhow...the forest fires will soon clear it later in the Summer.................0 -
Its being resolved as we speak. Apparently (I went on a greek forum and another one called the grape vine) it was due to locals in a village getting fed up on contaminated waste being put in a local landfill near their homes. So they blockaded it and stopped the lorries going in.
The authorities have managed to negotiate with them and they have removed the blockade for a period of 2 months to allow incinerators to be fitted.
The latest updates are Sidari is currently being cleared, Roda is clear and the other resorts are being tackled as a matter of urgency. Here is the link.
