Advance Rental

My Partner moved into our present accommodation 20yrs ago and I joined her 16 years ago, we are joint tenants.
A telephone call received yesterday from the housing association who own the property informed us that we owe them 1 weeks advance rental, this after all these years, the rent has been paid on the dot every month without fail!!.
Can they do this, after 20 years??.

Nothing like this, and I forgot to mention they are asking for the rent at todays rates, not what it was when she moved in.

I would write to them and ask them what information is it that they are using that requires you to pay this money.

Sounds like you've been paying your rent in arrears all this time, and they're trying to move you to advance.

You'll end up paying exactly the same amount - it's just that you'll pay for an extra week now, but pay for one less week at the end of the tenancy.

Let's say you pay your rent on a Friday.
As you're paying in arrears, then the day after tomorrow, you'll pay the rent for this week.
If you were paying in advance, then the day after tomorrow, you'd be paying the rent for next week.

When you move out, if you're paying in arrears, you still owe them that week's rent.
If you were paying in advance, then when you move out, you've already paid that last week's rent.

Ask them for a full rent statement for all those years showing rent due (Amount, date) & rent paid (amount, date).
