1991 PPI Brain Storm required

Options
We know we had PPI on an Alliance and Leicester Personal Loan taken out in 1991. The loan would not have been granted without it.
My husband was self-employed and I was a SAHM, pregnant with our third child. Husband finished self-employment due to financial downturn and took seasonal work. At the end of the contract he had to sign on and tried to claim on the PPI. Because of the seasonal work it was stated that he was not eligible. The PPI element was taken off the monthly payments and we struggled on for 4 years to repay the loan.
Anyway, we know we paid PPI but because it was so long ago Alliance and Leicester (Santander) have no records. I have searched the house for any scrap of information. I have found the sort code and account number (Lloyds TSB) of the account we used to pay the direct debit - but again, after a phone call to the branch, no records are available.
It seems that we're getting so close to having the required information but it's just out of reach.
Can anyone suggest any thing at all, however unlikely it might sound, to get a loan account number from 1991 to 1995

Sorry, I think you've reached the end of the road if you have no records and the bank have none.

1991 was a quarter century ago.

    I know!
It's just that we know we've paid it, A&L cancelled it when they found out it wasn't appropriate and you read of people getting their payments back after providing the companies with very little information.
I can remember making phone calls to them every month trying to arrange a payment figure that would leave us enough to get through the month. We repaid the loan but even 25 years ago we discovered PPI was not worth the paper it was written on

If the loan really wouldn't have been granted without it, then that would mean it was not mis sold.

Additionally, you wouldn't expect PPI to pay out for the end of a contract - it only covers unexpected events.

At least you didn't continue paying it for the full term, so that's something to be happy about.

As others have said, you have no records and nor do Santander, so that makes a complaint something of a non-starter.

In addition, Santander would seem to be in a position to argue that you know there was something wrong 25 years ago - so you should have complained to the Building Societies Ombudsman (one of the predecessors to FOS) then, rather than waiting until now.
