Moving my electricity meter

Hi all
My electricity meter is positioned slightly annoyingly for a piece of DIY I want to do, which is erecting a stud wall to box of part of my under stairs area. I only want to move it 6 inches or so, does anyone know if it is legal for me to do this?
Cheers
Nath

No you cant unfortunately its not your property and moving a meter is very expensive, that's why often they are left in awkward places.0

Hi
We had our electricity meter moved about 3 weeks ago and it cost us about £350. You have to get the electrcity board out to move it cos it is their property. I think for that £350 they will move it up to 6 meters0 -
mat of mine had his meter moved some yrs ago and that was about 350 quid too.
even if you could do it legally yourself, its unlikely to have enough free wire (in or out) to move it even 6 inches.Get some gorm.0 -
Hi,
The meters are the responsibility of the grid supplier in the area not your utility supplier. We had both Gas and Electric moved earlier ths year. Electricity was no problem but the Gas was a nightmare, long waiting list but after a quick call got it down to 8 weeks.

Does anyone know whether if you change supplier and the meter is changed to that of the new supplier you could get it moved at the same time for free or for a much-reduced cost? The wall our electric meter is on could do with replastering underneath the meter!
Hi, in the case of electric it's the local distribution company that owns the meter and they're the only ones that can move it. Your supplier should be able to tell you the meter move phone number for the distributor that owns your meter. With gas, the meters are usually owned by National Grid Transco, and again , they're the only ones who can move it.0 -
I have the same problem. My electricity supplier told me that they could move the meter up to 30cm. If it needed to be moved further than that, it was a job for the distributor, which is EDF in my case.
EDF said they would send someone round to look at my meter and give me an idea of the cost. That was about 3 weeks ago and I haven't heard a thing since.0
