Hand cuffed by EDF

I own a flat in London which is a Victorian House sub divided into three privately owned flats. 12 months ago we went to a tribunal and got a judge to transfer the Freehold to the three Flat owners from the previous Freeholder/Landlord. We have a communal area which has a single light bulb and is suplied via a seperate Electricity Meter supplied by EDF Major Accounts. In the last 12 months we have consumed a total of 13KW energy. I contacted EDF who told me that we are on a 'major accounts' tarrif just like BT or British Airways.:rotfl: I explained that we are consuming power for a single light bulb and that the supply arrangements were rediculous and of course expensive. I aked if we could move to a residential account and that I am prepared to set up the account n my own. They said that they would not transfer the account under any circumstances. Can anyone help? Thanks

Consult a comparison site, choose a supplier & tariff you would like and switch.

If EDF object, follow the EDF complaints procedure.

Do let us now the outcome :)

Does that supply operate off E7? Might be worth it... ;)

Or for the sake of 1 lightbub that consumes just 13kWh per year, (less than 2 quid a year even at single rate) then get an electrican round to wire it to one of the 3 flat's supplies, and get rid of the 4th supply altogether.

    Simples!

That does seem the most logical thing to do as you no longer have a "Landlord" so no need to have a "Landlords" account. Change the lamp to an LED and get it connected to one of the existing lighting circuits. Then tell EDF you no longer need the supply.

A "landlord's" (communal area) electricity supply is classed as a business supply (it's the responsibility of a management company). EDF are correct that the account cannot be changed to a normal residential account.

As has been said, you are better off having the landlord's lights wired into one of the flats (any electrician should be able to do this), and then just agree to pay the flat supplying the electricity £1 a month, or whatever it costs to keep the lights on.

Once the lights are transferred over, you can tell EDF that the landlord's supply is no longer needed, and ask for it to be removed.
  • As we now own the Freehold we aren't going to have a Management Company, we don't want or need one. As for moving the lighting supply accross it isnt actually that easy. So we still need to move across to a Residential Account.:j:j

In general, suppliers treat a "communal" electricity supply as a business premises, so this needs to be a business account.

The communal areas are not actually a private dwelling, so you cannot have a residential account.
  • EDF agreed to let me have a residential account after I threatened them with the Ombudsman, common sense prevails!!

Threats to go to an ombudsman service are pointless unless and until you have complained to the provider and allowed them time to resolve (normally 8 weelks unless they provide you with a deadlock letter sooner)

But all's well that ends well. ... :)

I still suggest you follow the advice I gave in post#2 though

Well done. Not all suppliers are willing to argue this point.
