A Compact Digital Camera

A want to buy a cheap digital camera with which I can post photographs of items that I want to sell on Gumtree which camera would you recommend that does the job ?

I have seen a few from Argos for around the £40 mark that look ok what do you think

  • Do you have a modern mobile phone? You might find the camera on that is better than a cheap digital camera.

My son has a £30 camera from Argos. It's far worse than my phones camera. Its only just average, and utterly unsuitable for low light.

BUT.. with enough lighting a cheap camera might be ok. You'd be best with a tripod too.

All the images that I will be shooting will done outdoors so light should not be a problem
  • Do you have a cash converters or CEX near you? You'll find you get a MUCH better camera if you go find one of them and buy an old Canon IXUS, or something like that. Don't get too upset if it's 5-10mp as it'll take a better shot than a 16mp Polaroid cheapo. I had a 3 MP Canon Ixus that took some great shots.

    e.g. https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SCAMCANIXU165A#.V3OtO_krKM8

Just make sure there's no scratches to the lens, and that it turns on/off well.

I've looked at the outdoor photos from my son's camera - there's so much grain to them it's hideous.

    No

The Canon Ixus range in particular come with a removable battery which goes into a supplied charger.

Its best to have a removable battery as you can carry a spare!

For ebay I use an old Lumix ls2. Good pictures and very good macro. Its set to 2mb due to the small memory card. For Gumtree you don't need anything better. Look on ebay or try freecycle. Older cameras have little value but are perfectly adequate.

Depending on how often you expect to use it, if you are considering an aa batteried camera be aware they can consume batteries quickly so add stay charged batteries and charger to the cost.

One of the problems with the 'dirty cheap' cameras from Argos is that they'll need AA batteries. You generally won't find a rechargeable camera for under £45-ish.

Some charge directly from a USB cable, better brands tend to have a separate charger. If it charges from USB, it'll come with a charger, and will most likely use any USB socket to charge from.

I've always liked Panasonics (The Lumix cameras) myself.

+1 for Lumix cameras. You may be able to find a used FS3 or FS5 for less than your budget.
