This is to ensure you don't pack a broken item and claim they broke it, it pack a Ming vase wrapped only in tissue paper.

I'm not sure how the insurance would help you in that situation though - it just means you'd be having the same argument with the insurance company.

If I don't take their added insurance, what are my rights in the event of loss?

Without any such limitation in your contract, you'd have the right to recover your losses caused by their negligence - so if they drop your telly, you could claim for the cost of replacing it with something similar (not necessarily "new for old", but whatever it takes to put you back in the same position).

If they're in the trade of moving other people's valuable stuff, I'd be a bit worried at their apparent lack of confidence in their abilities. Or more likely, the insurance is just a cynical profitable sideline for them, a bit like the self-storage or car hire companies.

I can imagine the reaction of my clients if I told them they couldn't sue me for my negligence unless they bought extra insurance from me!

Hi i moved from London to Bristol for £200 including via Surrey in there too. I used Anyvan and now using the same guy again for this weekend £140 all in for a couple of trips 10 miles down the road - so I see it as a good deal. He has all the insurances etc and we fantastic with the move from London. Have a look perhaps?

Double check what will be covered. Many firms will not cover items in boxes that they did not pack themselves, or only cover a bare minimum. The firm i used also mentioned 40 quid as their standard.

Now that I am at my desk and have my emails, I can clarify having read my correspondence with one removals company.
Some removals companies will not insure packed items at all unless they pack the boxes themselves. This is so you cannot claim they broke something which was already broken or improperly packed. They will still insure "loose" items such as furniture, hoover, TV, etc.
