Agree with Alice about her suggestions. I'd strongly advise going to one of these for help with the completion of the form. The questions won't be the same as she was asked on the phone. It might be helpful if you can make contact with an agency in your mothers area. With CAB, at least in the part of the country I am from, detailed work is usually done by the office where the client lives. It, also, might help your parents to have a local contact

I understand that this is a very worrying time for all of you. However, try not to think too far ahead or be too negative about the DWP. There are, as seen in this thread bad things, but I also know cases where the process has been smooth. It may be that your mother does get the right award first time

    Good luck with it

As with many situations in life there are horror stories, which are reported more than situations where all went well.

I think that by allowing yourself to be convinced your situation will be dealt with incorrectly or harshly you risk becoming negative and challenging, which must be adding to your stress.

It's a fact that many are dealt with in a professional and positive manner by the DWP and other government agencies, but these individuals don't come onto forums very often to post about these experiences, so all we tend to see are the negatives.

I also don't believe you need a "game plan"; unless you're playing a game of course (no offence meant, but I think your terminology here is a bit unfortunate. You and your family are not on trial. You have simply been called to an assessment which should be conducted in a fair and professional manner, with the outcome matching the facts and circumstances you report.

Try to leave some of your negativity behind and to approach this as working with the DWP to put in place the help and support that your mum's circumstances require.

Just to add what you said about your mum's cancer- DWP refused to take my cancer into account for PIP but it was directly enough to have me put into Support Group for ESA with no assessment- go figure.

  • Thank you for all the responses in the last week, it is much appreciated.
  • At what point would they expect the car back, and her money be reduced if they didn't give her the 12 points. Would it be after she is interviewed and the decision maker casts judgment?

There's several voluntary sector agencies in Birmingham that can help your mom complete the PIP form.
Birmingham CAB can give appointments to do this, but you need to attend one of the drop in sessions first. The waits can be long, so make sure you tell reception it's a PIP form when you arrive.
There may also be a few weeks wait for the appointment itself, so do get there asap to get an appointment within the deadline for return of the form.

    Put your hands up.

Once the decision is made, it will be implemented 1 month later. This includes returning the car, if necessary. This is the same, even if the claimant goes on to appeal.
