Letters of administration

Am awaiting application forms from Probate Office for letters of administration (cousin died without a will) and also inheritance tax forms.
Some creditors have sent forms for aunt to complete which state that I need to send a death certificate and Letters of Administration with the completed form before they can furnish me with closing balances. As I need to pay Inheritance Tax on the estate won't I need to pay this tax first before I get the Letters of Administration? How can I provide these figures on Inheritance Tax form if I don't have them yet? Totally confused.

Catch 22 I am afraid. AFAIK you have to make an estimate and tell HMR&C when you submit the application and then submit revised figures when you have them and get a refund. The creditors are being very unreasonable in the circumstances.Crowdedhouse wrote: »Am awaiting application forms from Probate Office for letters of administration (cousin died without a will) and also inheritance tax forms.

Yorkshireman99 thanks for your kind help. I thought I was going mad. Cousin had some kind of policies with Legal and General against her mortgage. They keep sending me the same forms without any indication what policies cousin had or their values. And the forms keep asking for the letters of administration.
Maybe I'm at fault here for not understanding the process.0 -
I think it is the L & G that are at fault. I can only suggest a politely worded but firm written, not emailed, letter of complaint to the L & G Managing director.Crowdedhouse wrote: »Yorkshireman99 thanks for your kind help.
