Hello All,
I have just moved into a property with Storage heaters wired into HeatWise.
I can't seem to find any time periods or information about this online. It appears I have two(?) Electricity supplies.
1 for the Storage Heaters / Immersion Heater, 1 for the rest of the house.
How do I know how much this is costing me for the standard stuff? (Washing machine etc).
Do most people switch to Economy 7 / 10 Meters? I spoke to someone at EON and they had absolutely no idea what heat wise was. Is there a specialist number to call?
If I moved to E7/E10. Would it still "turn on" my heaters in the house?
Thanks for any help, I am very confused!

As all people who move into a new home (where they are respoinsible for the energy bills) have to do, you must call the supplier to create a new account. They will also need meter readings.
It may well be that as you are on a legacy tariff, the supplier has a a special department that deals with this type of metering and the accounts for them.
However, as soon as you give the operator your adress, they should see the metering you have and that it is on a legacy tariff, and should be able to either handle the matter, put you through to the necessary department or give you the required number to reach that department.
The supplier will then be able to provide all the details of the tariff.
Do not attempt to switch supplier with this type of metering. Attempts by others to do so have invariably ended in tears.0 -

Hello denzelfive and welcome to the Forums.
Hope the move went well and wasn't too stressful. If you haven't already, please follow footyguys excellent advice and let us know the details so we can set up an account for you. Thanks footyguy.
As Heatwise is a particular type of meter only found in the East Midlands, thought it might help if I give you a bit of information about them and sorry the advisor you spoke to wasn't able to do this. There's quite a bit I can tell you so sorry in advance if I ramble on. These meters were designed mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. They give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity in every 24 hour period for heating and water heating only. This is in three time slots during the afternoon, in the evening and at night. The actual times depend on the make of Heatwise meter you have as well as the region. I'll be happy to find these times for you if you drop an email to the address in my Profile.
Heatwise comes with a conventional single rate or Economy 7 meter which records all other usage. If you've Economy 7, you'll have 7 hours at night where all usage is charged at off peak prices. Again, I can tell you more about this.
To work, the meter will be wired into the heating/water heating circuits at the property. Unless manually overridden, this lets the meter automatically turn the heating on during the off peak times and off again afterwards. During the off peak times, all electricity used for heating/hot water goes through these dedicated circuits and is recorded on separate meter registers. If the hot water runs out, there's a one hour boost you can use although, if used outside the off peak times, this will be charged at the higher rate.
Due to the specialist nature of this type of meter we've only the one tariff available. If you let us know you've moved in we'll send a Welcome Pack that will include these prices. There's very little about these meters on our website.
Heatwise is, though, nearing the end of its life and we're gradually phasing them out. In the near future, you'll be offered a choice of a two rate Economy 10 or the more conventional Economy 7 or single rate meters. There's no charge for these meter exchanges.
Economy 10 is the nearest to what you have now and will be wired into the relevant circuits so the storage heaters/immersion heater can be used as now. There's still 10 hours off peak electricity in every 24 hour period at night, in the afternoon and during the evening but this is for all usage. There isn't a boost option though. Also like Heatwise, we've only the one tariff available.
There's also the option of having a single rate or Economy 7 meter. There are more tariffs available with these meters both with us and with the other suppliers. These, though, may not suit your current heating set up and I'd recommend taking professional advice before going down this route.
Sorry again to overload you with information denzelfive and that our advisor wasn't able to help. Hope this gives you a bit of an insight but you know where I am if you need more details. Happy to help.

Thanks Malc.
I have done all the steps that footyguy suggested. (Obviously, otherwise I couldn't have talked to an EON representative!)
Thanks,
I had a welcome pack, that just talked about, Low, Normal, and Boost rates.
On my Meter, it has a sticker than shows times for Rate 4, and Rate 1. Any idea which is which?
Also, I seem to have two fuse boxes. (1 for storage heaters and tank) and 1 for normal stuff.
What rate will my washing machine be using if it comes on? I read somewhere that it will come out the boost tarif, regardless of what time it is using electricity?
Im sorry Malc, I cannot see your email address on your public profile. Sorry If I am being foolish and missing it!
And is there a number / contact / department at EON, that I can call to migrate onto an E10 Meter?
Thanks for all the help.

No you are not being foolish BUT you must change your user settings as the forum skin hides the details. I know it is terrible.
Go to the User Control Panel and change "Forum Version Manager" to old version, save changes and then go look at Malc's Public profile. The email address is in the section "Additional Information"
Once you have the email address, then change back to the latest Forum version is you wish.0 -

If memory serves me right in the Midlands region Rate 4 is the Low rate and Rate 1 is Normal0 -

Hello denzelfive and thanks for coming back to me.
It sounds like your Heatwise has the Economy 7 option. This will record all electricity that doesn't go through the dedicated heating circuits I mentioned the other day. Here, there'll be 7 hours at night where all usage is charged at off peak prices. As Wolf3 says, usually Rate 4 records this off peak usage and Rate 1 the higher priced day usage. This part is separate from the Heatwise section. Heatwise records heating/hot water usage going through the dedicated circuits at set times at night, during the afternoon and in the evening.
Your washing machine and other electrical appliances will be charged at the lower prices if used during the 7 hours at night. If used outside of these times, the higher day rates will apply. The Boost option only applies to additional hot water and then when it's manually activated by hitting the relevant button on the front of the meter.
I suspect the prices in the Welcome Pack are as follows.
Low - Economy 7 off peak night usage and heating/hot water usage going through the dedicated circuits.
Normal - day peak usage.
Boost - usage for additional hot water when the button on the meter is pressed.
I'm still guessing quite a bit denzelfive. Did you find my email address as gsmlnx explained? If you did, please drop me a line with your details and I'll be happy to put more flesh on the bones so to speak.

I agree Wolf3. Usually, in the East Midlands electricity distribution region, Rate 4 on our Economy 7 meters records lower off peak usage and Rate 1 the higher peak usage. I say usually because I have come across oddities before now but these tended to be on older meters. Most new ones are as you say. If in doubt, I ask customers to boil an electric kettle and see which reading moves. Usually does the trick.

Hi my 80 year old mother is on heatwise & has had a letter to say that it is changing to Eon energy plan. I have looked at the new tariff she I to be charged & it has gone up by 2p per unit. When my sister rang eon they told her it was because she has the multi M plan meter and if she wants a new one fitted then she will have to pay the electrician to change the meter. She is having a new smart meter fitted which they said would be attached to the old meter. Any help would be appreciated.0

Hello April and welcome to the Forums.
There's no charge for replacing a Heatwise meter or for having a smart meter. What I think you might mean is a possible charge to make sure your mother's heating and water heating aren't affected by a meter exchange.
As I posted earlier in the thread, Heatwise meters were designed mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. They give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity in every 24 hour period for heating and water heating only.
To work, the meter will be wired into the heating/water heating circuits at your mother's property. Unless manually overridden, this lets the meter automatically turn the heating on during the off peak times and off again afterwards. During the off peak times, all electricity used for heating/hot water goes through these dedicated circuits and is recorded on separate meter registers so it can be charged at the lower prices. If the hot water runs out, there's also a one hour boost that can be used although, if used outside the off peak times, this will be charged at the higher rate.
Heatwise meters are coming to the end of their shelf life and are being replaced. There are several alternatives being offered depending on the circumstances at individual properties. Some, like Economy 10, are straight swaps needing little or no additional rewiring. Others, though, could require some remedial electrical work to make sure your mother's heating isn't affected. This is where charges can come in. Depending on the specific circumstances, we usually recommend customers take professional guidance from a qualified electrician. This is only a recommendation as we have a duty of care to make customers aware of the possible implications. Ultimately, it's down to the individual customer whether or not they do this.
If you let me have a few more details, I'll be happy to give you more advice. Things like if there are still storage heaters at the property, if gas has been installed, how your mother heats her water and any particular circumstances that might apply. Alternatively, have a chat to our specialist Simpler Metering team (contact details are on the letter we sent). They look after this type of meter exchange and will be happy to help.
