Tax Credit Overpayments

Hi,
I received a letter informing me that I owe HMRC over £3000 in overpayments for child tax credits.
The reason they gave is that my estimated total for tax year 2012/13 did not match my actual total at the end of the year.
The estimated and actual totals were around £9000 difference.
This £9000 was a one off payment from the company I work for as it had been taking over by a different company.
Do I have to pay the £3000 back even though it was not my wage that changed?
Isn't it like me winning £9000 on the lotto and the HMRC asking me for the money back?

Income is income and what is taxable will impact on tax credits. Did you really think it wouldn't?0
