First time Buyer

Hi everyone,
I've only joined up as I have recently bought a house with my girlfriend. As a first time Buyer though I can see me hitting a couple of issues I've never had to deal with, and the first one has appeared in the form of gas and electric bills.

My girlfriend was advice by various people to phone the existing supplier (Scottish gas) of the house we've bought with meter readings. When she done this the guy tried to set her up with an account, and a tariff til 2018.

We're not even sure if we want to go with Scottish Gas, and aren't sure of what we need to do. Can anyone please advise me if setting up a deal is the standard process, should I phone elsewhere and do I even need to contact Scottish gas in the first place if we don't want to go with them?

All advice much appreciated!

    Hi gaz0301

Yes you do need to call Scottish Gas, setup an account and give them the opening meter readings. It is called a Deemed Contract and you cannot avoid it.
BUT when you call them, tell them you want to be given the cheapest tariff with no exit fees.
Once you have the account setup then you are free to look around the price comparison sites for a better deal.

Consult a comparison site to find what is the best deal for you :)
(but don't attempt to switch at this time)

Then do as gsmlnx says above, but then you will know whether or not you do want the SP tariff until 2018. If you don't, either tell them which tariff you do want from them ... or if you decide you will be switching to another supplier as soon as you can, then ensure whatever tariff they put you on has no early exit fees (all suppliers have at least one such tariff).

Any switch is going to take 3-5 weeks to occur from application, and in the meantime you will be supplied by Scottish Gas.
