Does anyone knit?

Hi
I am looking to take up knitting again. Have made some things in the past but was never very good at it. Anyone know any good beginners websites? Also have found my local co-op sells wool and it's quite cheap. I also thought it would stop me from eating in the evenings after my son goes to bed!

  • For interesting patterns, once you're up and going, Knitty.com is great! I'm doing socks at the moment :)
  • Errrrrr all of the above. I find knitting is great to occupy your mind and hands if you are trying to lose weight.I hadn't knitted for years too.

My advice is start on something small, for your son maybe and you'll be amazed how much faster you get after just a few days.

I'm really enjoying knitting again. Forgot how nice it is to see someone wearing something I have "created"
How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?
  • Thankyou for your ideas. I will give it a go, I quite fancy it on cold winter nights. I have a mate who could help me, not my mum, she's so good it makes me feel inferior!

I started knitting again last year - baby clothes for DGD! I really enjoyed it and am going to find something else to knit soon. Sadly, no knitting shops nearby so have to make trip to somewhere else to get the basics. I remember when all towns had a hoice of wool shops. Come on, if enough of us take it up again, maybe there'll be more shops opening again!

    And giving up smoking!
  • Look at what I have posted tonight about Jean Greenhowe. Her patterns are so easy to follow and you can knit and then dontate to charity. One essential tip - do them in the colours she suggests to get the best results. I once had to totally revamp a Sally Scarecrow for a friend's daughter because it looked like a witch! The knitter had used dark brown and black when lovely primary colours should have been used.

  • A good website for tips on how to knit (not just for beginners tbh) is
http://www.knittinghelp.com/ (it is an american site so a lot of the terms are those used in Amercia, but it has videos you can watch, stop, advance frame by frame etc so you can see exactly HOW they make the stitches.

Also for free patterns try https://www.knittingpatterncentral.com - it has hundreds all organized by category.

If you want a forum where you can post and ask advice (and maybe show off your work) you could try Craftster - it is not just Americans that post on there - people from all over the world do, incl UK and Europe.
  • Last night I took to rummaging through my patterns to see what I could knit - must be the dark nights fast approaching. Both of the children have got past knitted garments although my DD might accept a shrug if I could get the right pattern! I am a bit of a knitting addict with folders of patterns never knit and bags full of wool so I am going to start to use it up. Over the past few years I have knit hats which I put in one of the shoebox appeals in the run up to Christmas. Keeps me away from the biscuit box and hopefully helps someone else as well.
