All good advice there, but personally I'd just say no thanks. A few years ago we went on holiday with my sister and her husband, all they wanted to do was eat and drink in very expensive places - £40 a meal  and get driven around by a taxi. If I suggested a walk she pulled a face - never again! I could go on but I wont - all the best in whatever you decide to do :D
  • Sometimes you have to be politely firm with family.

Better to get a little bad feeling over with now than pay out big bucks and fall out on top. Why should you go in August when you don't need to?

Don't know what the budget is but a cruise could work.

They cater for all age groups and plenty of places to seperate from the BIL when you need to. not beach but pool and various stops to see do stuff.

Pretty much a fixed cost before you go and limited options to overspend.

You share a cabin with your mum, if you feel the need not to close to the rest of the family.

If you really don't want to go....and it's not going NOT money that's the real issue. You could always not be able to get time off from work but pay for Mum anyway.
I'd be honest with your Mum and tell her you don't want a repeat of the previous holiday with your BIL though-and yes your sister DOES seem to like her own way. Do you ALL say "How high?" when she says jump ? ;)
(and yes I do understand it's about your Mum spending time with the grandchildren but there is such a thing as compromise)
Why are you paying it all for your Mum ? Can't your sister pay half ?

Why don't they all go to a caravan if it's about having quality time as a family- choose one that isn't too far away, then you can be called back to work to deal with an emergency that no-one else can deal with- that's why they pay you the better money, after all.;)

Hi, haven't checked this thread for a while due to work but thanks for all the comments - wondered if I was the one being difficult. I do love my family but we're better in small doses :-). My sis is not controlling I think she just needs a break - she is supporting whole family on her wage and works very hard (she's a nurse and I think they are chronically underpaid). I get on well with them all most of the time but I think that me and my bil are both stubborn - hence the year of silence. I will find out more this weekend and tactfully (I hop) suggest the 1 week idea.

Hi, I suggested the one week idea and that maybe we could all go for 1 week at the start of July and then sis could take off 1 week in middle of hols to relieve stress on bil. We looked at start of hols and it was cheaper - just not cheap enough. Think plans are shelved for the time being unless someone at sis work who has a villa in Spain rents it to us v cheaply. Oh sis said mam had said she could go then when we started discussing it at the weekend mam said she couldn't afford it - I just said that I expected to pay for mam.
Ta for all your help and advice :)

Got to be one week :) Also suggest you don't get into the habit that week of all meeting for breakfast / dinner, as that can cause friction in the what where and when to eat stakes.... make it clear tht you want to do you own thing to geep that gap a bit...
