Maybe get some advice from various charities?

Which have just done a study on web cameras - please try your local library?
I to would be checking with charities as I know very little about dementia & only a little more on the possible risks of a camera onto public space.0 -
Although I can't help with camera suggestions, if you find one that will send an e-mail to you, you can use a service like http://www.notifymyandroid.com/ to turn it into a phone notification.
When my front door opens my phone buzzes and I get a notification, it also makes my phone flash like crazy (because I put the priority high) so it's super obvious.0 -

There used to be a poster on here called Tropez who I think would know, as he works in security. Not sure if he still posts?
I think the camera would be pointing at private property, not public space, if it's someone's front door, but having said that it could I suppose be a block of flats and the corridor would be communal.0 -
This might be a very good use for "Hive". When ours was installed for the heating it was mentioned that it is often used by those whose relatives are in the early stages of dementia. It will notify your phone when the door/window has been opened and then you could perhaps look at the camera on your laptop?

We bought this as a baby monitor. It's actually better than I thought especially for clarity of picture. You get alerts when it detects motion and both me and o/h can use it at same time on android and iphone.Come on sucker lick my battery0 -
Check with your local community care/social work department, they should be able to advise on the telecare products available and help you to source them. There are so many variations available, door sensors which alert when they're opening between certain times, motion sensors, fall detectors, community alarms.
You could buy an IP camera with a motion detector but I'm unsure how well it would work, it could potentially be triggered by rain, birds, the post etc. and you would need to have a good and consistent phone signal to check it on the app. I wouldn't say don't get one, but I would look into the telecare products available that are specifically designed for those living with dementia first.0 -
We started using a Y-cam to keep an eye on our cats when out or away:

It's been brilliant so far. Has an app which automatically triggers an alert in the top status bar of your phone when it detects movement. Also can be setup to auto-record when movement seen, or of course you can just click for a live view.
It also has sound, and what I think is an extremely good night vision.
Best of luck.0 -

We have one of these in the hall, and one in the lounge. If any motion-even a fly- is detected it sends an alert to my partners iphone. They also have excellent night vision.0 -
