Looking at a Peugeot 407 later but have read quite a cross section of reviews online.
Its an 06 plate 2L SE 65k on the clock and comes with some toys and looks a bit more interesting than a Mondeo or Vectra.

Any thoughts from you knowledgeable lot

A number of years ago I looked at the 407 when wanting a bigger car - like you Peugeot impressed me with how much they spec up their models. Found it a weird driving position on the test drive, but it seemed ok at the time. The other reason i considered it is that my Dad is a Peugeot mechanic and has been for over 20 years. At the same time I was looking at a Honda Accord, year older but same price. Rang my dad to get his opinion, and he basically said the 407 was so awful that it was one of the models that gave him job security, especially clutch and gearbox issues. I bought the Accord and never regretted it, was an awesome car...

    What a pointless post.

The kind of opinion that makes broad generalisations on every subject and like all generalisations they are as likely to be wrong as they are right.

I can't remember that last French car that had some of the engine issues that some "premium" German marques have had.

And not forgetting when people attack the Vectra as being Vauxhall tat. Pity it's actually a rebadged Opel and nearly as German as an ultimate driving machine.

I believe some where assembled in the UK, though every one I have seen or driven all German made.

    Unless it's a van......they're the best
  • The local taxi firm we use has 407s, both estates and hatchbacks (or are they saloons? Can't remember).

Whilst they're comfortable enough and most of them have done pretty significant mileages, the drives complain about the reliability almost every time I get in one. Numerous electrical issues, but also they've cost the firm a lot of lost time in other, more major mechanical issues including dodgy clutches, driveshafts, gear selection problems, and a propensity to eat suspension bushes.

It's interesting what marketing and public perception can do.

Amazing that seat is so successful, ok it's part of vag, and people may perceive that they are getting a cheap and sporty vw, but compared to France then Spain doesn't excactly have a history of producing any cars, let alone quality ones.

In the London PH trade the 407 and bigger 508 are rare, which could be an idea into how realise they are.

Though people could be avoiding them due to depreciation, they make a sensible used buy for that reason, though the lack of a decent Autobox may actually be something to do with it, and the reliability and ease of use of the Prius and Insight.

Though if one came up at a decent price and drive well I would take a punt, they apparently handle quite well due to the double wishbone front end. I would steer clear of the 1.6hdi though, the 2.0diesel lump is well proven anyway.

I had a couple of 406s which were totally reliable, however, stories around the 407 at the time put me off getting one.

When I drove Peugeot hire cars around that time, they were extremely dull.

It was like driving a video game. Press one pedal and the scenery goes past faster, press another and it slows down. Turn the wheel and the scenery start to go sideways a bit.

But no feeling that you were actually driving a car anywhere.

Perfectly good for long motorway drives, and I was amazed by the fuel economy of the diesels, but I wouldn't want to own one.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
