Samsung TV not working

I bought a Samsung TV a year and 11 months ago and today on two occasions when I have tried turning it on, it has just turned on and off non-stop for about 30 minutes. Then finally works. But the controller won't work at all while it's doing this.
It was bought from Currys and only had a year warranty on it.

I'm worried it's about to completely stop and it shouldn't keep turning on and off like this. I've never had a problem with previous Samsung tvs.

What are my rights?
What can I do about this?

I have read some things about the sale of goods act, saying it should work for up to 6 years and also something about an EU 2 year warranty rule.

Then you need to read some more.

You appear to have misunderstood what you read about the 'EU 2 year warranty rule'.
The EU directive instructed EU member states to ensure that their legislation allowed the consumer a minimum of two years to seek a remedy from the seller. The UK's legislations allows a consumer up to six years to seek a remedy from the seller, so complies with the EU Directive.

Can you please give us a pointer to where you have read that 'it should work for six years'.
  • It's possible that it is a faulty remote controller causing this.
If the on/off button was sticking slightly, this could cause the problem that you describe.
One way to rule this out is to turn the TV on and if the problem happens, cover the remote control up or take it out of the room. Remotes often work even if not pointing directly at the appliance they are for so simply pointing it away from the TV may not stop it from operating the television.

If it is the remote at fault, with a bit of care, these can often be taken apart and the internal circuit board and conductive rubber switch pad can gently cleaned.
A wipe with a clean tissue is generally good enough to clean them.

Buying a cheap Universal Remote would also solve the problem, if the OP doesn't fancy dismantling the original remote.
  • The only problem with universal remotes is that although they will control the TV, they often don't replicate all of the functions and modes that the original unit did.
This wasn't a problem with "standard" TV sets but with smart TV's it can be quite a pain in the ar5e.

Sounds like your power supply in the TV has failed. Common in Samsung TVS, it’s usually poor quality capacitors in the power supply. This would be deemed an inherent fault.

You need to submit a report to Currys from a TV repair firm. If the report agrees with me you will get the cost of the repair met or the cost of the report plus the cost of a new TV, minus an amount for the time you have had the TV.

I wonder if Samsung have very recently pushed out an update that has caused this. I've had two people in the last week come to us for independent reports for the exact same symptoms on Samsung TVs.

We are not TV engineers so didn't actually do the reports but gave them details for a local firm that will do it.

We often get people with TVs with power issues but it's usually either just turning themselves on or just turning themselves off. This repeatedly turning on and off for 20-30 mins is a new one on me so very strange for me to hear of it happening to three TVs in the space of a week.

First thing to check (if you haven't already) imo is the batteries in the remote. Low batteries can cause erratic behaviour in a tv.

Before putting new batteries in though (after taking old ones out), turn tv on and see if it still happens. If so, its not the remote. This will save you having to potentially buy another remote to see if yours was faulty or not.

Also your tv is now experiencing a fault. If it is an issue with the tv itself or remote (not battery related of course), then you can either return to currys (who may ask for an independent report) or approach samsung under warranty.
